Long-time Premier League player Shola Ameobi could be the man to follow in the wake of departed Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero, as the Sky Blues confirmed they are in talks with the man they are hopeful will become the club’s next big-name marquee.
The 32-year-old Nigerian international and former Newcastle United striker is on the lookout for a new club after having been released by the Magpies last month, and – according to The World Game – his agents are considering an offer from Sydney FC.
Ameobi – a former England U21 international – is pushing for a spot in Nigeria’s final 23-man World Cup squad to be announced on Tuesday and would no doubt relish the opportunity of playing in his first –and likely last – World Cup, after debuting for his native country in 2012.
Whilst his age and high footballing pedigree make Ameobi an attractive marquee proposition on the surface, it should be pointed out that the last three seasons have not been at all fruitful for him on the goal-scoring front, as he has netted just five goals from 75 Premier League appearances in that time.
Have your say: Do you think Shola Ameobi would be a good signing as Sydney FC’s international marquee?
