The drawn-out racial vilification dispute between Sydney FC midfielder Ali Abbas and Western Sydney Wanderers striker Brendan Santalab reached its conclusion on Thursday, with FFA’s Disciplinary Committee dismissing the charges due to a lack of evidence.
Following two lengthy hearings stemming from the allegations levelled at Santalab by Abbas after the Round 22 clash between the two teams, the Disciplinary Committee found that “the necessary standard of proof” was not met, and that “it was possible that Ali Abbas may have misheard what was said by Brendon Santalab” due to the loud noise of the 40,000-strong crowd and the lack of any supporting eyewitness accounts from others on the field.
Both Abbas and Santalab are yet to comment following this decision.
Have your say: What are your thoughts on the outcome of this case? And do you agree with FFA’s process in investigating the matter?
