Sydney FC can potentially sew up a finals spot with a win at home to Wellington tomorrow afternoon – depending on the result of Saturday’s match between Newcastle and Melbourne Victory.
The Sky Blues will be full of confidence against a Phoenix outfit that are renowned poor travellers and have only won once in the Harbour City out of their last nine attempts.
A 10-man Sydney side scored a memorable 2-1 win in the first match between these two teams this season at the SFS in November – thanks to a goal at the death by currently injured striker Ranko Despotovic – before Wellington evened the ledger a month later with a 1-0 triumph across the ditch.
For one of the few times this season Frank Farina has named an unchanged squad, following last weekend’s 1-1 away draw with the Victory. Expect Hagi Gligor and Alec Urosevski to once again be the two players to drop out of the game-day line-up.
For the Phoenix, defender Manny Muscat will miss the match through suspension, while promising 17-year-old midfielder Alex Rufer – the nephew of New Zealand football legend Wytnon Rufer – could make his A-League debut, after being named in Wellington’s 18-man squad.
Have your say: Are you confident that Sydney will take all three points from this one? And who do you expect to be amongst the goals for the Sky Blues?
